How to Prepare Your Central Home for Air Conditioning Installation

So you’ve recognized that it’s time to upgrade your existing air conditioning system to a more energy efficient system. Congratulations! You’re buying in to your family’s comfort as well as the reduction of your energy costs and responsible consumption of energy. While those are all great things there are still a couple other things you can do to prepare your Columbus home before you get going with the air conditioning installation process.

1. Review the Manual J Heating and Cooling Load

First of all, the AC contractor should have completed what’s called a heating and cooling load calculation. This involved calculation takes into account the home’s structure, roof, windows, direction and location to decide the size and type of equipment needed. Ask to see the load calculation and have it spelled out for you. If the contractor did what’s referred to as a Block Assessment, or did not complete a load calculation at all, we would strongly recommend choosing another contractor or calling Stevenson Service Experts at 614-334-3192. Your Columbus HVAC expert will be able to give you a full assessment.

2. Clean and Seal Ducts.

Next, have the company clean your ductwork. It’s not smart to introduce caked on dirt and dust from a very old duct system to your brand new air conditioning system. The health of your entire system and the quality of the air you breathe starts with your ducts providing clean air, so make sure that they are cleaned and appropriately sealed by the HVAC contractor. If you can’t remember the last time you had your ducts cleaned or have never had them cleaned, have the contractor do a duct cleaning before your new AC installation

3. Clear a Path.

Prior to the air conditioner installation you will also want to clear the area where equipment will be installed, and make sure it is easy to access. There are stairs, landscaping porches, decks or other items close to the AC, clear the area as well as you can. Ensure the area is clear of yard waste like big sticks and leaf piles so installation is even more stress-free. Also make sure to clear away any obstructions that could get in your installation professional’s way such as garden hoses, rakes, or children’s toys. Make sure pets are confined so they do not get in the way of the installation crew.
