So you’ve decided it’s time to upgrade your existing air conditioning system to a more energy efficient system. Congratulations! You’re making a long-term investment in your family’s comfort as well as the reduction of your utility bills and responsible consumption of energy. While those are all great things there are still a few more things you can do to prepare your Central home before you get going with the air conditioning installation process.
First of all, the AC contractor should have conducted what’s called a heating and cooling load calculation. This complex calculation takes into account the home’s structure, roof, windows, direction and location to determine the size and type of equipment needed. Ask to see the load calculation and have it explained to you. If the contractor did what’s referred to as a Block Assessment, or did not do a load calculation at all, we would strongly recommend finding another contractor or calling Rolf Griffin Service Experts at 260-557-1275. Your Central HVAC expert will be able to give you a full assessment.
Next, have the company clean your ductwork. It’s not recommended to introduce caked on dirt and dust from a decades old duct system to your brand new air conditioning system. The health of your entire system and the quality of the air you breathe starts with your ducts delivering clean air, so make sure that they are cleaned and properly sealed by the HVAC contractor. If you can’t remember the last time you had your ducts cleaned or have never had them cleaned, have the contractor do a duct cleaning prior to your new AC installation.
Prior to the air conditioner installation you will also want to clear the area where equipment will be installed, and make sure it is easy to access. There are stairs, landscaping porches, decks or other items near the AC, clear the area as well as you can. Make sure the area is clear of yard waste like big sticks and leaf piles so installation is even simpler. Also make sure to clear away anything else that could get in your installation pro’s way such as garden hoses, rakes, or children’s toys. Make sure pets are contained so they do not get in the way of the installation crew.
